Childless By
God's Choice

Galatians 4:27 For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren
that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that
travailest not: for the desolate hath many more
children than she which hath an husband.

In the Bible there are several examples of barren women…Sarai, Rachel, Manoah’s wife, Hannah…to name a few. But if you carefully study the lives of these women, you will find that they were barren only for a season. Albeit, barrenness for any amount of time can seem like an eternity!

What about those of us who are truly barren and will not ever conceive? Can there be any contentment in our lives? Can we ever serve the Lord our God joyfully? Dear sister, I am here to tell you, YES!!! Sometimes, God allows us to remain barren for reasons only known to Him. Contentment can be found in the barren woman…"Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content" (Philippians 4:11). Now, that’s not to say that we won’t have some moments of longing for a child every now and then. That is only natural. Proverbs 30:15-16 says, “…There are three things that are never satisfied, yea, four things say not, It is enough: The grave; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that saith not, It is enough.” If you look closely at the items listed in Proverbs 30:16, you will see that there is absolutely nothing we can do about any of them…including the barren womb! God is the One who opens or closes the womb (Genesis 30:22, 1 Samuel 1:5).

In today’s society, pressure is put on many childless couples to adopt. Now, it may be God’s will for some couples to adopt a child. But, it’s not necessarily God’s will for every childless couple to adopt. It may very well be God’s plan for a couple to remain childless in order to better serve Him! If the Lord is not leading you to adopt then please don’t give in to the pressure of society. Sarah thought she would help God out concerning her barrenness and look at how many lives were ruined (Genesis chapter 16).

If you are childless by God’s choice, remember there is coming a day when the barren shall be called blessed (Luke 23:29). Galatians 4:27 says, “For it is written, Rejoice thou barren, that bearest not…”. Step up to the challenge in which God has called you and serve the LORD with gladness!

Psalm 100:2-3 Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing. Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
