Ecclesiastes 12:12 And further, by these, my son, be
admonished: of making many books there is no end;
and much study is a weariness of the flesh.

2 Timothy 4:13 The cloke that I left at Troas with
Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee,
and the books, but especially the parchments.

These books are not for the faint of heart. They are not recommended for mothers to use who want their children to be "nice" Christians and stay close to Mommy.   If you are afraid to have your children go beyond you mentally or spiritually in zeal for the Lord, then you definitely do not want them reading these books.  By the grace of God, these books are the sort that will inspire kids and young people to "count the cost" and esteem "the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt..."  If the Lord's return for His church is not as close as it would seem, we need a generation of Christian young people that have been raised on something better than Dickens, Shakespeare, Alcott and such worldly wastes.  Children need something to fill their minds other than the usual T.V., videos, movies, computer games, and the great, overwhelming cess pool of misinformation that has permeated everything from the world to the so-called Christian educational book producers. Books like friends,
should be few and well-chosen.
- Samuel Johnson -

There are some "so-called" Christian homes today with books on the shelves of the library that have no more business there than a rattlesnake crawling about on the floor, or poison within the child's reach.

Samuel Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language

We recommend this dictionary because it was compiled in England earlier than Webster's, so it is closer to the time of the translation of the King James Bible. For Bible study it is very useful for defining words no longer in common use, as well as common words.
