THE "I'M HAPPY" SONG

What is the mystique of Pharrell Williams' Happy Song?
What is the alternative to the Bible believer?

By Steve Van Nattan

The Happy Song has taken the world with a storm. In any workplace, especially in IT environments, start singing the first line of the song, and the whole place will join in and go nuts.

What is going on here? There is no appeal to sex, drugs, suicide, racism, or all the other depressing messages in modern pop music. There is a very simply message. I am happy, do not butt in please.

I believe this song is another chance for Bible believers to sit up and take notice. Something is coming down. I recall how we all, in conservative Christian circles, mocked at the folk music of the 1960s, and we basically let the whole era go to hell. The Happy Song is a great opportunity to learn about the modern mind and what our message should be to them.

The Official Version of
The Happy Song

What is happening in this song's astounding success-- 575 million hits on YouTube? I intend to analyze this from a historic perspective, and I will then predict what is coming based on what I see happening in modern society worldwide.

During the Great Depression of the 1930s and 40s - people were miserable and broke, they pinched pennies and ate skimpy so they would have the door fee to go to the Aragon Ballroom, the Palladium, and the movie theater. As horrible as life was on the street and with unemployment and rationing, people were addicted to anything that would make them happy, even for a couple of hours. It was like an intermission from the terrible times people shared.

The Yemen version below of Happy speaks volumes. These people are the camping place of Jihadi terrorists who try to overthrow the Yemeni government, and the US Military is bombing and killing terrorists and innocent Yemenites constantly. There is not much "Happy" in Yemen, and do look at the last caption at the end. It is like Pharrell Williams gave them a new national anthem.

The whole world is mesmerized
by the song

BBC special in London -- Note the decent looking fans in the above teen age era !! This is not the mob of crack heads and drunken sex perverts of the rest of the rock music genre.

Happy Yemen -- This one is amazing. Yemen is very troubled by terrorists trying to destroy their government, and the US Military is shooting up innocent people all the time in Yemen. Note the last line in the song caption.

Happy at the Coka Cola company, NAIROBI, KENYA

Pharell brought to tears seeing all the shots of the Happy Song
being performed around the world.

Pharrell Williams CBS Sunday Morning Interview -- This guy has a rare kind of humility. Saying he would be nowhere without his music teachers-- refusing to project his success, indeed frightened of that.

Pharrell Williams has a very decent side to him, as you see in this unexpected visit to his fans.

24 hours of happy !! -- Watch this for a while. Meditate on all the misery in the world. Think about ISIS in Iraq killing Chaldean Christians. Think about Kibera, 1.5 million people in total poverty, living in tin shanties, outside of Nairobi, Kenya. Think about Kibera. >>>>>>

Here is how this works. Kenya now has WIFI all over the nation. So, if someone in the heart of the Kibera shanty town (see photo), sitting in a hovel made up of scrounged rubbish, manages to have a lap top (which happens), they can turn on "HAPPY" 24 hours, and the narcotic of happy music will somehow drive the misery away, at least until someone steals the lap top. Can you deny those people the distraction from their misery. Sure, it is an artificial veneer over an abyss of horrible reality, but it FEELS happy.

Now, what is the message?

Pharrell Williams clearly is not using any symbolism common to modern music, especially with his being Black. The Black music culture is full of freaky hand signals, suicide, murder, racism, Satanism, and drug exaltation. There is none of that in I'm Happy. Here is my analysis of the fans he has:

1. They seem to be in the 18 through as much as 50 age. This song is not trapped in age dating, so it is lasting like no other single song possibly, in American history.

2. It is being sung all over the world. My son reports in his IT job that someone will start singing the song, and everyone will join in. It is clean and innocent-- no sexual innuendoes, and leaves people no feeling of having acted disgusting while singing it.

3. Don't take me down.
The song's only confrontational moment is to gently tell the person spoken to that I do not want to hear your bad news.

Here come bad news talkin' this and that
Give me all you got, don't hold it back
Well I should probably warn you I'll be just fine
No offense to you, don't waste your time
Here's why
Because I'm happy

I believe this is the couplet that grabbed the soul of Yemen, London, Slovenia, India, Malawi, and Sydney. The bad news is coming on in epidemic loads. From President Obama to Alex Jones to Drudge to your pastor. Everyone seems to be peddling sorrow and misery, and the young adults of the world are getting overload.

Is the bad news true?
Answer: Pretty much all of it is based in some truth.

Is the spreading of bad news helping anything?
Answer: There is a theory that by dumping all the conspiracies and tricks of the US Federal Government and every other nation's government sins onto the Internet, some plots to do evil by governments have been exposed and prevented. That may be true, but in the process, we have to deal with an unbelievable amount of horror. So, for many people anyway, the bad news is getting them really depressed and psyched out. The Happy Song is an escape from this, and who can blame people?

4. Is there a spiritual factor?
Answer: Yes, and it will prove deadly. You see there is bad news in the Gospel. For those who receive the Gospel of Jesus Christ and reject it, there is hell to pay. There is no way around this, and to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ as the Good News, without the alternative, is evil and cruel.

Also, many churches these days, like Joel Osteen's monster gush the rush church in Houston, give the prosperity Gospel in which people are told how to be happy and prosperous. The bad news of the world around us, sin, and the destiny of hell for those who reject the Gospel, are NOT preached. The Happy Song reinforces the notion that life is all happy and successful, and heaven is just around the corner for the beautiful people who just stay happy.

HAPPINESS AS A MINISTRY

So, while it is somewhat refreshing to see a modern singer do something with no disgusting innuendoes, something that seems to be good clean fun, the message is sending a hedonist society right on down the road of self-gratification and dull mindedness. The Happy Song gives no solutions to the real miseries of modern life. The guy living under a bridge may get a few moments of relief while the song's hubris is rising, but in the end, it is back to life under the bridge, holding a sign in the sun, and begging for a hand out at the intersection.

I believe Bible believers need to take a queue from The Happy Song. But, our response must be to look for people who are not happy, and I mean people who are miserable and could benefit from something more than a song. Like food, clothing, and a visit to a restaurant while we join them in conversation-- just to show that someone cares. Most of all, Jesus said we need to be salt, and we need to talk to the troubled of this world about Jesus Christ.

We think soul winning is all about handing out tracts, going door to door, street preaching, and so on. These may bear some fruit, but my experience has been that little is accomplished with these. It is time for American Christians, indeed, Christians all over the world, to give people who are alone or troubled something to be happy about. And, I am not just talking about walking up and slapping them with the Gospel. I am talking about spending time, caring, staying with them through some issue, that sort of thing. And, do not expect the average Fundamental Baptist preacher to encourage this sort of behavior. Most of them are all about numbers and filling the offering plate. This sort of thing is up to YOU, and you will have to do it on purpose.

Now, I have some links you can watch for inspiration. These are all ordinary people who are probably not born again, and they are doing acts of kindness, what has come to be called "paying it forward." God has done so much for you, how about doing something for people you meet at random?

All Russian cars have dash cams for legal purposes. The cool thing is that we get to watch many close calls by these boisterous Russians, but best of all is the random acts of kindness.

SECURITY CAMS CATCHING SPECIAL MOMENTS

HAPPY-- THINK IF THE PEOPLE HELPED.

AND, SOMETIMES YOUR BREAD CAST ON THE WATERS RETURNS

There are thousands of these moments online where people are bringing happiness that is far more powerful than a cool song. Please consider asking the Lord to use you to make someone happy. You hear I kid in the store asks his Mom for something a bit special, and Mom tells him, "Not this week Johnny, Mommy cannot afford it. Maybe next week." Moments like that are gifts from God to YOU. When you get out some cash to pay for the thing, give Christ the glory. When the Mom says they don't want to take hand outs, I tell her there I do not give only at church. This is my way of giving in the name of Christ, and please accept it that way.

WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF "HAPPY" WITHOUT CHRIST?

We need to talk about counterfeit happiness in two places-- happiness in the Whore church, and happiness in the the world.

Happiness in the Whore church

Below I have a video of Robert Putnam telling us that there is a huge pool of disgruntled young adults out there who are candidates for the next big push to enlarge Christendom. The "fishing for men" of the mega church will be some new message that is very seductive. Who will win in the contest for these people?

Pharrell Williams actually gave us the message of the future Happiness cult in worldwide Christendom:

"... On paper I'm a Christian but really I'm a Universalist," said Williams. "Do I think that Christianity is the only way? No. I think the only route for everything is their connection to God … There's religious dogma that gets involved, something for the greater good and sometimes for not so great reasons … But they give you a way, a vehicle to get to God."

No dogma. Have we heard that before. Pope John Paul II called for a prayer meeting at Assisi, Italy long ago, and every pagan freak religious leader was present. THAT was universalism. THAT is Whore Church religion. The alleged Church gives way to all gods, and dogma gives way to banal prayer.

I believe, based on the ongoing message of the mega church now, that HAPPINESS is the message which will win. The emerging Whore church will be invited to be happy while making absolutely no changes in their life. This will be 100% hedonistic. It will lead directly into the era of the Antichrist who will unite all religions worldwide in a religious zeal to be one in unity while retaining nothing of their various doctrines. Self will then be god, and we are close now.

Happiness in the World

The world will be happy to the bitter end. Happiness will be the ultimate deception.

Matthew 24:37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,
39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

The masses, the Laodiceans of Revelation 3, demand to be made happy. They want to be "rich and have need of nothing." They may forfeit all their freedoms and become virtual slaves of the world oligarchy, but they must be kept happy at all costs. This is the ultimate narcotic. A happy sinner feels no pain. He needs no Savior. Satan will see to it.

The world today, though burdened in the far corners, under bridges, and in tent cities, with misery, is a jolly world. They spend money, they marry, they live it up in many ways, they buy and they sell. It is very hard now days to convince most people that they are sinners and in need of a Savior. Big Business is the savior of the world today. The number of choices of breakfast cereal is mind boggling. The sheer enormity of Amazon offerings is beyond measure it seems. Life is, and will continue to be, a big party right up to the middle of the Great Tribulation. Then God enters with his wrath, and the party is over.

So, Bible believers will need to deal with the disillusionment of preaching and being brushed off, like they did to Noah while he was building the ark for 120 years. Everyone they talk to will say, "Hey man, that is cool for you. I am glad that works for you, but I AM HAPPY with my life. Don't take me down."

Here come bad news talkin' this and that
Give me all you got, don't hold it back
Well I should probably warn you I'll be just fine
No offense to you, don't waste your time.

Will you stay happy in Christ Jesus, or will you decide that the Christian life is a burden, and being rejected by the world is a burden too heavy to bear.

2 Thessalonians 3:13 But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.

2 Timothy 1:12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.
13 Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

Hebrews 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin
.

And, you will not have to resist unto blood. The ugly truth about Satan's world, and Satan's mega church is the mushy sweetness of it all. These people will not kill you literally, they will kill you with HAPPY, false happiness. There is something worse than being burned at the stake-- being ignored all your life like Noah was-- being given a pat on the head and told, "Cool man, build your nice big boat there, and be happy." By the standards of many of you church leaders, Noah would have been called a total failure. He only got his three sons and their wives and his own wife. His congregation was the beasts of the field. They came to church eagerly. '

THE OTHER HAPPY

HAPPY DAY --

Happy Day was a fine old hymn. But, in the 1960s it went down town and picked up the urban Gospel touch, and then went worldwide. People were shuckin and jiving to this song. The interesting thing is that, as vulgar and some of the groups were who sang Happy Day, the message went unchanged. My sins, Washing away, Jesus did the washing, Watch and pray, HE TAUGHT ME. The source of this happiness was from OUTSIDE the singer. The source was Jesus. This is probably why vastly the most common groups to sing Happy Day were Black. The Black community, with all its sorrows, and with is social and cultural disintegration, still wanted to be happy, but, most importantly, the Black community has been the last to shuck off Jesus from everyday life. White folks are totally self-centered.

The Happy Song does not need Jesus. And, it is a sad day for the Black community. Have they also walked away from Jesus as part of their culture? Is the salt gone?

"Here come bad news talkin' this and that, Give me all you got, don't hold it back, Well I should probably warn you I'll be just fine, No offense to you, don't waste your time."

But, the success and fame of Happy Day, urban style, haunted me back in the '60s. Why did the world want that song? I think I see it now. They were miserable. The Vietnam War was dragging on and on, and the US was not winning it. It ended in total defeat with the US running from the scruffy Viet Cong like rats. The folk and hippy message was, "You capitalists are destroying the world." There were fiery riots in Watts, Detroit, and on college campuses. The world needed a happy moment, and Happy Day would do just fine. Jesus was not that much of an offense then. In fact much of the protest music called on the Sermon on the Mount for context.

Nothing has changed, in fact, it is getting worse, much worse. The horror of 9/11 signaled a new age all right, a new age of terror anywhere on earth. Whether 9/11 was an inside job, or it may have been done by Middle Eastern terrorists as claimed, it matters not-- sudden death seems to be everywhere. This is not because it IS, but it is because the media and powerful world governments have orchestrated a culture of fear. People are accepting the loss of all their rights, having believed the lies that terror is lurking in their basement, so the masses allow government take total control of their minds in the illusion that total invasion of privacy will equal peace and safety. NSA, and a hundred other national spy agencies, intrude 24 hours a day, read every Tweet, and listen to every cell phone on earth. People are in a culture of fear and are anesthetized into mental tremors and terrors.

Thus, the Happy Song came along just at the right time. But, Jesus is missing. The Gospel is missing. The final solution is missing. This is why the 24 hour Happy Song site will get millions of hits. It sure beats random white noise in the background. You cannot jive and sing along to 24 hours of sea waves. I can hear it now, "Mommy, I can't go to sleep, would you put on the Happy Song?"

HAPPINESS IS THE LORD

We sang this back in the 1970s, and all through it is the idea that happiness if based in the Lord Jesus Christ, and over and over a changed life is linked to happiness for the Christian. The song was a bit fluffy in genre and in style, but the message was still there.

HAPPY IS THE MAN

This hymn from the Church of God hymnal had 8000 hits when I found it. Pharrell Williams' Happy Song had 540,000,000+ hits on the same day. Why? Answer: The hymn is a poetic version of the King James Bible, Psalm 1. The bedrock of all happiness, the very voice of God to this sin sick and troubled world, does not have the appeal to the lost. It does not make us want to go shuckin' and jivin' down the street. The Word of God, when applied to our life, changes us completely, and then we are truly happy. But, that is costly happiness.

LAST THOUGHT:

Someone will read this article and ask me if I should be approving of the good works of people of the world. Pharrell Williams has some very worldly friends he has performed with in the past. As the salt of the earth in Christ Jesus, it is about time we understand that when ungodly men to decent and commendable things, we need to encourage them. It is the Church of Jesus Christ that has pressed the cultures of the world into the decent zone for nearly 2000 years, and I intend to keep pushing them in that direction. So, I wish Pharrell Williams was born again, but he is a breath of fresh air with his Happy Song, and I have no problem with encouraging him to keep on what he is doing.

But, the ultimate test of the life that is happy is in the experience of the true Bible believer who has confessed his faith in Jesus Christ. This person, not all the time, but on occasion will experience horrible things. He will be tormented at times by Satan and by wicked and unreasonable people. What then?

1 Peter 4:12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:
13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.
14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.

"Happy are ye....."

Are you?

When "the end of the world as we know it" settles in around you and your neighborhood or nation, will you be happy? You may be the only one around who is happy. And, you will not be happy because you are determined that men and circumstances will not "take me down," as Pharrell Williams cries. You will be happy because you are under the power of God the Holy Spirit, and you have the mind of Christ.

When the real test of "HAPPY" comes, only Jesus Christ can keep life happy.
