Mark 6:1 And he went out from thence, and came into his own country; and his disciples follow him. Mark 6:2 And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands? Mark 6:3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him. Mark 6:4 But Jesus, said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house. Mark 6:5 And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them. Mark 6:6 And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching. Mark 6:7 And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits; Mark 6:8 And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse: Mark 6:9 But be shod with sandals; and not put on two coats. Mark 6:10 And he said unto them, In what place soever ye enter into an house, there abide till ye depart from that place. Mark 6:11 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. Mark 6:12 And they went out, and preached that men should repent. Mark 6:13 And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them. Mark 6:14 And king Herod heard of him; (for his name was spread abroad:) and he said, That John the Baptist was risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him. Mark 6:15 Others said, That it is Elias. And others said, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets. Mark 6:16 But when Herod heard thereof, he said, It is John, whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead. Mark 6:17 For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife: for he had married her. Mark 6:18 For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife. Mark 6:19 Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not: Mark 6:20 For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and an holy, and observed him; and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly. Mark 6:21 And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee; Mark 6:22 And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee. Mark 6:23 And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom. Mark 6:24 And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist. Mark 6:25 And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist. Mark 6:26 And the king was exceeding sorry; yet for his oath's sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her. Mark 6:27 And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought: and he went and beheaded him in the prison, Mark 6:28 And brought his head in a charger, and gave it to the damsel: and the damsel gave it to her mother. Mark 6:29 And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb. Mark 6:30 And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught. Mark 6:31 And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. Mark 6:32 And they departed into a desert place by ship privately. Mark 6:33 And the people saw them departing, and many knew him, and ran afoot thither out of all cities, and outwent them, and came together unto him. Mark 6:34 And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things. Mark 6:35 And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed: Mark 6:36 Send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and into the villages, and buy themselves bread: for they have nothing to eat. Mark 6:37 He answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat? Mark 6:38 He saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? go and see. And when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes. Mark 6:39 And he commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass. Mark 6:40 And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties. Mark 6:41 And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all. Mark 6:42 And they did all eat, and were filled. Mark 6:43 And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes. Mark 6:44 And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men. Mark 6:45 And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people. Mark 6:46 And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray. Mark 6:47 And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land. Mark 6:48 And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them. Mark 6:49 But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out: Mark 6:50 For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid. Mark 6:51 And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered. Mark 6:52 For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened. Mark 6:53 And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore. Mark 6:54 And when they were come out of the ship, straightway they knew him, Mark 6:55 And ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was. Mark 6:56 And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole. 1. At Home with doubt- Vs. 1-6
A. The home folks forgot a lot- vs. 1-3 Read 1. Jesus at 12- No one remembered. Luke 2:44 But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. 45 And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. 46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. 47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
This also tells us about Jesus as a child. He never tooted His horn in Nasareth.
2. One fellow knew of Jesus' character Matthew 3:13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. 14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?

Mark 1:21 And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught. 22 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes. John 7:14 Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught. 15 And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned? 16 Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. 4. How is it today? Answer: Jesus tells us. Vs. 4 Missionaries experience this. Come to home church. Folks are sceptical. Hit the road-- May havee a real ministry. What did the Apostles show us as a solution? Discuss Paul's travels. Menno Simons. David Livingston. William Carey. Moody, Finney, Torrey, Billy Sunday, all seemed to be "on the road." Spurgeon-- stayed home-- made a bunch of enemies. Jerry Rubingh-- David-- Thought to be the least. Brother mocked him.
[ 5. Vs. 3 again Roman Catholic Ch. claims Mary was "ever virgin." Here are Jesus' brothers-- James, Joses, and Juda. Also, sisters. Classic example of RC nonsense. ]
6. Vs. 5-6- The end of doubt-- No power. Did Jesus have power? Cf. Mt. 28:18-19; Heb. 1:3. So, why couldn't He do the mighty works? Ans. Vs. 6- Unbelief. Can this happen to us? Can we limit Christ through unbelief? Discuss. Read Psalm 63. What is the key to see God's power mentioned in vs. 2. Ans. vs. 3-8-- We will see no power if we are not obsessed with the person of Christ. 2. Far Away with power- Vs. 7-13
A. Vs. 7- He sent out the 12 1. Consider Judas- He too had power to cast out devils. Could an unsaved man have the power of God? Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
Look at Judas later. John 13:1 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. 2 And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him; 3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; 4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. John 13:26 Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. 27 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.
The test of a man is not the power of God in him. Matthew 7:16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
2. Go two by two- Why? Paul was always with someone else. Acts 17:14-15; Prov. 13:20; Prov. 11:14; Prov. 15:22; Prov. 20:18; Prov. 27:9; Prov. 27:17 Missions recently- Use the same principle. Very hard to work alone. ILL. Brother Don Bradshaw in St. David.
B. Vs. 8-9- Take staff and sandals. No scrip, bread, money, and no second coat. Why? Converts were to provide the rest. If not, leave a curse on them. ILL. Peter R. w/ family. 3. Vs. 10- Strategy? Home by home to reach town by town. Discuss this compared with today. 4. Vs. 11- Thee message? Repent. This was always the Messianic message. Matt. 3:1-2; Matt. 14:17; Matt. 9:13; Acts 2:38; Acts 3:19; Acts 11:18; Acts 17:30; Acts 20:20-21; Acts 26:20; Rom. 2:4; 2 Cor. 7:10; 2 Tim. 2:25; Heb. 6:1; Heb. 6:5; Heb. 6:6; 2 Peter 3:9; Rev. 3:19; Rev. 9:20; Rev. 9:21; Rev. 16:11 Repentance (1) is central to salvation with: 2) The Blood; 3) Faith; and 4) Confession. Judas repented (Matt. 27:3), but what went wrong? We MUST call men to repent. Sinners to repent for the first time to be saved. Saints to be restored to victory. 1 Peter 4:8
Shoes or Sandals?
One of the favorite texts to point out a contradiction in the Word of God is Matthew 10:10, Mark 6:9, and Luke 10:4. It appears that in Mark 6:9 Jesus told them to wear sandals, and in Matt. and Luke He told them not to wear them. The truth is clear in the KJV and any Greek text. Once again, when you meddle with God's Word, he meddles with your mind.
(1) Both the Textus Receptus and Nestle's Greek agree on the two Greek words. (2) HUPERDEMA is a shoe to cover the foot, possibly over the sandals as well. Cf- Matt. 13:11 implies it was carried to use at the destination-- a sort of dress shoe. Acts 13:25 implies it was strapped on. Mark 1:7 & Luke 3:16 indicate it had a latchet. (3) SANDALION is a basic sandal for traveling, a simple foot pad, sometimes tied on. Thus, sandals were required in Mark 6:9. Dress shoes were forbidden in Matt. and Lk. (4) The KJV gives the clear distinction of two kinds of foot wear. There is no contradiction! (5) The NIV provides the textual (cruddy) critics with a grand case for a contradiction. (6) The NASB damns itself, showing that it knows the distinction, but it plans to muddy the waters. So much for the claim that the NASB is more true to the Greek than other recent versions. It makes even more certain that the alleged contradiction is not answerable. (7) Ken Taylor, trying to correct the "contradiction," shows that he believes there is an error. This serves the critics very well. They can claim his correction of the Bible as highly incriminating proof that it was needed. In fact, Ken Taylor damns himself to Hell. (8) The NKJV makes all three the same, so it points to a contradiction in the text. Wicked! 5. Messianic ministry- Vs. 12-13- Four characteristics: a. Preached repentance- This is still with us. Acts 20:20-21. b. Cast out devils- Missionfields of the world. c. Anointed the sick with oil- James 5:14 d. Healed many- Signs to the Jews Cf. Mark 16:15-18- Greek scholars hate this. They feel intimidated because they do little or none of these. Fact- These were done in Acts with Jews to confirm the Apostolic message to Jews. Cf. Acts 8:9-25- This is the last place in the New Testament where the word "sign" was used of Apostolic sign power to Jews or Judea.. Note the confusion it caused in Samaria. When the Gospel went to "the utterrmost part of the world," signs were not the confirming thing. Healing was replaced by preaching the Gospel. Cf. II Cor. 12:12- Signs at Corinth? Aren't these Gentiles? Acts 18:7-8- This shows how signs came to Corinth- to Jews. Cf. James 5:14-15- Healing in the Church age is done by Christ in answer to prayer. So the side show healing is alien to Christ-- It is of Satan, TBN et al. Cf. Revelation 13:3; 12-13- Note how Satan uses healing and wonders. Are we not close to this day? So, there is already lying healing. II Thessalonians 2:8-9- This is to varify that Satan is Messiah. Revelation 22:2-3- Healing seems to be possible with no curse. Discuss:

This shows us the power in John's life. It also fulfills a prophecy. See, Isaiah 53:3 and John 1:11 15 Others said, That it is Elias. And others said, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets. Malachi 4:5 16 But when Herod heard thereof, he said, It is John, whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead. It is curious that this old pagan wino believed in the resurrection, but the Saducees didn't! 17 For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife: for he had married her. 18 For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife. Please note that a marriage of thee unsaved is valid. What can we say about Roman Catholic annulments? Is a non-christian spouse cause to allow divorce? Can a Christian re-marry after divorcing a non-christian? One flesh is physical and the spiritual can't change that! 19 Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not: 20 For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and an holy, and observed him; and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly. Many wicked rebels have kept touch with godly men. 21 And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee; 22 And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee. This dance involved nakedness. There is very little good said in the Bible about birthdays. 23 And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom. 24 And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist. 25 And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist. 26 And the king was exceeding sorry; yet for his oath's sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her. What can we learn here about oaths and promises? Matt. 5:34-37 27 And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought: and he went and beheaded him in the prison, 28 And brought his head in a charger, and gave it to the damsel: and the damsel gave it to her mother. 29 And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb. What is the price of speaking against sin? John 16:7-10 How do you suppose the death of John the Baptist affected Jesus? Luke 7:28- Jesus didn't need Mary nearby to feel the sorrow of John's death.

4. Hard heart-- How to get one- Vs. 30-52 Vs. 30-34- The ministry wearies the servant. People are a distraction. Personal experience- piano tuning. ILL Scholars who study & publish, but can't communicate with people. ILL Professional students. Thus, all seminaries. Fruit becomes common, even mundane Discuss the bored look on the face of many evangelists. Evangelist who came to Yermo. Complained about the crowd.
Vs. 35-44- Miraculous provision becomes common, just a job. Masses become a burden-- "Where are the refreshments?" Bible study- 20 min. and food- 40 min. How does this hit the teacher? Are these people lavable? NO! Must we love them? YES! with rebuke. Cf- John 6:26- "Did you come for the food or the Food?" Gal. 6:9-10
Vs. 45-52- God brings the tension up. Burdens too hard to bear. Why? 2 Thess. 3:13- Weary destroys faith & joy. Answer: Vs. 52- Hearts hardened. How can this happeen to us? Get Ans! What is meant? They took Christ for granted- common. He wants us back totally dependent on Him. Suddenly, we are amazed at God again. Awe and fear retrurn. Isaiah 50:4- How can we help each other avoid the hard heart?
5. End thoughts- Vs. 53-56 The boredom has broken. The disciples and Christ are back at the work. What have we learned? Gal 4:18- "Always????"- How are we "affected?"
