MARK

Chapter Nine

Mark 9:1 And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power.

Mark 9:2 And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them.

Mark 9:3 And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them.

Mark 9:4 And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus.

Mark 9:5 And Peter answered and said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.

Mark 9:6 For he wist not what to say; for they were sore afraid.

Mark 9:7 And there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.

Mark 9:8 And suddenly, when they had looked round about, they saw no man any more, save Jesus only with themselves.

Mark 9:9 And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of man were risen from the dead.

Mark 9:10 And they kept that saying with themselves, questioning one with another what the rising from the dead should mean.

Mark 9:11 And they asked him, saying, Why say the scribes that Elias must first come?

Mark 9:12 And he answered and told them, Elias verily cometh first, and restoreth all things; and how it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things, and be set at nought.

Mark 9:13 But I say unto you, That Elias is indeed come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they listed, as it is written of him.

Mark 9:14 And when he came to his disciples, he saw a great multitude about them, and the scribes questioning with them.

Mark 9:15 And straightway all the people, when they beheld him, were greatly amazed, and running to him saluted him.

Mark 9:16 And he asked the scribes, What question ye with them?

Mark 9:17 And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit;

Mark 9:18 And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not.

Mark 9:19 He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me.

Mark 9:20 And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming.

Mark 9:21 And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child.

Mark 9:22 And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us.

Mark 9:23 Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.

Mark 9:24 And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.

Mark 9:25 When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him.

Mark 9:26 And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead.

Mark 9:27 But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose.

Mark 9:28 And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out?

Mark 9:29 And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.

Mark 9:30 And they departed thence, and passed through Galilee; and he would not that any man should know it.

Mark 9:31 For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day.

Mark 9:32 But they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask him.

Mark 9:33 And he came to Capernaum: and being in the house he asked them, What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way?

Mark 9:34 But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves, who should be the greatest.

Mark 9:35 And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.

Mark 9:36 And he took a child, and set him in the midst of them: and when he had taken him in his arms, he said unto them,

Mark 9:37 Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but him that sent me.

Mark 9:38 And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us.

Mark 9:39 But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.

Mark 9:40 For he that is not against us is on our part.

Mark 9:41 For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.

Mark 9:42 And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.

Mark 9:43 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

Mark 9:44 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

Mark 9:45 And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

Mark 9:46 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

Mark 9:47 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:

Mark 9:48 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

Mark 9:49 For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.

Mark 9:50 Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.

CHAPTER NINE:

1. The Messiah in His glory revealed-- Mark 9:1-13

2. Deliverance is by prayer and fasting-- Verse 14-

29

3. Missing the point-- Verse 30-37

4. Was Jesus ecumenical?-- Verse 38-41

5. Holiness-- Verse 42-50

1. The Messiah in His glory revealed-- Mark 9:1-13

a. Verse 1- When is this to be fulfilled? [ Read all ]

First, it has nothing to do with the Church age.

It is Messianic only

Second, it is clearly fulfilled in verse 2-13.

Third, if there is any other fulfillment, can we be content to let

the Tribulation Jews figure it out?

Fourth, Vs. 1- How does the Kingdom of Messiah come?

Answer: "With Power"

Discuss Reconstructionists:

Will the Church bring in the Kingdom?

Foundations of Social Order, Rushdoony, p. 222, top and last in

book

Show Matraiya prayer-- Are they not the same?

Fallwell, Robertson, Billy Graham, Pope John Paul II?

b. Verse 2-13- Some important lessons:

First Lesson, vs. 2 "After six days..." This implies that they

went up the mount on the Sabbath.

What is implied? Christ is Lord of the Sabbath. Matt.

12:8

He is the rest of Israel. 1 Kings 8:56; Isa. 30:15; Jer.

30:10

Israel is NOT at rest:

From without- PLO, CIA, and world bankers

From within- Zionists- Zeph. 3:11-13

Both of the above solved in one text!!

The Jew got his blessings on the Sabbath.

Ex. 20:11; Isa. 56:2

[ The Jew worked and then rested on the seventh

day.

The Christian rests on the first day, then he

works. ]

Is there an application today?

YES. Heb. 10:25 We are not "Sabbath" keepers.

We are Lord's Day "assemblers."

"So much the more" Sunday only?

There is dryness for those who reject this.

There is also a fall. 2 Pet. 3:17

Why could not we cast him out?

29 And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer

and fasting.

A. Scribes don't offer deliverance- Vs. 14-16

This is common today.

Question diagnosis. "It is mental disorder." "It is a

chemical imbalance."

Saints end up going to psychiatrists and psychologists.

End up on Prozac and Zannix.

Derwin Crabtree in mental Hosp. in Norwalk.

Seminaries DO NOT teach students to deal with devils.

Nor do Bible colleges.

Pat answer: "Stay away from that."

We have HAD to war with devils, like it or not.

To decline is to give them ground in the Church.

Thus, Peter and Ananias and Sapphira. Acts 5

Note who answered Christ's question to Scribes in Vs.

16!

Not the Scribes nor the disciples.

A lot of desperate people these days. Who asks?

B. How do devils attack people?

1. Vs. 17 and 25- They take away speech and hearing.

Why? Discuss. So that they cannot hear the

Word.

Is this still true?

CF 1 Corinthians 12:2- People have gods like

themselves.

Ask a Roman Catholic priest a question about

doctrine.

He will be "dumb" or silent nearly every time.

CF Romans 11:8- Jews are in satanic dumbness.

Ask a Jew some simple O.T. question. No

answer.

Do you think devils are not involved?

Check out the Cabala & Talmud. Much

doctrine.

But it is of devils. 1 Timothy 4:1

2. Vs. 18- Devils "take" their victims over.

Zombies of Haiti.

They follow their father, Satan. Matthew 4:8

Jesus not devil possessed, but Satan

allowed to "take" Jesus. Devils love to "take"

people.

Modern expression, "He got carried away."

3. Vs. 18 & 26- Teareth him.

Devils delight in mutilation. Any will do.

Dark countries- cutting and mutilating flesh.

Modern countries- Make up and piercing the body

in every imaginable place for inserting

ornaments.

Note how it increases with paganizing of our land.

4. Vs. 18 & 20- Foameth at the mouth and gnasheth

teeth.

Also, "He is beside himself." Out of control.

I have seen this at a Gish lecture. Man afterward

raging and stammering.

Scared the evolutionist PhD.

Why, "gnashing teeth?" Pain! It is cruel to deny

deliverance to the possessed.

5. Vs. 18- Pineth away.

Anerexia is caused by devils.

7. Vs. 21- Devils pick on kids.

Why?

(1) Parents bring them up to be evil, door is

opened.

(2) Generational- Inherited from relative.

Not parent usually. Why? Devils want long

stay (3) Kids rebel. Choose evil. At age of

accountability, devils take over.

Does God favor innocent children? Jonah

4:11 8. Vs. 22- Devils like to burn people.

Fire is their destination. They want revenge.

Fire destroys. Thus, it is central to all witchcraft

6. As part of suffering for the Gospel. II Cor.

11:27

We do not fast today. It is part of our weakness.

C. Jesus tells how these are cast out.

Prayer and Fasting- Vs. 29

There are some victories which we will not see

because we will not fast.

Our zeal for food is greater than our zeal for victory.

Implied: Appetite

Cf. Eccl. 6:7; Prov. 23:1-2; Isa. 29:8

3. Missing the point-- Verse 30-37

Mark 9:30 And they departed thence, and passed through Galilee; and he would not that any

man should know it.

31 For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands

of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day.

32 But they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask him.

33 And he came to Capernaum: and being in the house he asked them, What was it that ye

disputed among yourselves by the way?

34 But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves, who should

be the greatest.

35 And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first,

the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.

36 And he took a child, and set him in the midst of them: and when he had taken him in his

arms, he said unto them,

37 Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me: and whosoever

shall receive me, receiveth not me, but him that sent me.

b. "I am the greatest"

1. Recall Mohammed Ali- "I am the greatest" floats like a

butterfly, stings like a bee. But today, he is a

blubbering millionaire. Brain gone.

Who first worried about being the greatest? Isa.

14:12-14

2. Note how grossly they missed the point or teaching.

It happened twice.

Cf. I Sam. 2-3- Sad stary. Eli to lose priestly line,

but..

God trusted Eli to raise Samuel to be godly.

Look at Samuel's life. Eli must have loved

3. Does this mean a church is built in the Sunday School?

NO. It means the Church is made up of families.

Discuss churches that rip up the family.

Islam, Catholic Chu, Mormons, (babies for power

later. Let them run loose now.) Hinsus, etc.

4. Was Jesus ecumenical?-- Verse 38-41

Mark 9:38 And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name,

and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us.

Mark 9:39 But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my

name, that can lightly speak evil of me.

Mark 9:40 For he that is not against us is on our part.

Mark 9:41 For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong

to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.

a. Vs. 38- Note who was being ignored. Who?

1. Story of Full Gospel Church in Benson, AZ.

They don't KNOW us. They know the Word- KJV.

If they do their works in the Name of Christ, then

what?

2. When should we forbid anyone doing anything?

Answer: NOT over there. Rather; in here.

Cf. 1 Corinthians 5:1-5 Out of the Church only.

We have NO mandate out there, unless it is Satan's

Cf. 2 Corinthians 10:4

b. Vs. 39-40- What does "on our part" mean?

1. It does NOT mean that he is in "unity" or "oneness" with

us.

Unity implies all is agreed. It is not here or in our

day.

2. "On our part" smiply means they are working toward our

goals

What it is NOT.

Cf. Acts 19:13 Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists,

took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of

the LORD Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul

preacheth.

14 And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief

of the priests, which did so.

15 And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and

Paul I know; but who are ye?

16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them,

and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled

out of that house naked and wounded.

It is clear that these men were not "on the part" of

Jesus.

They saw the fame of Paul. They wanted it.

These need to be sent out.

c. Vs. 41- The works of others.

Jesus makes it clear that many will serve Him.

We will not approve of all of them.

Does that mean they are no good? Are we the final

authority?

What about God's mercy? Just let them be His

servants.

Application: Read: "heroes of The Cross" p. 17-20

Shorten some, but discuss her testimony and seeking the

Holy Spirit. Whe was "on our part" but had problems.

This has nothing to do with ecumenism or even "unity."

5. Holiness-- Verse 42-50

Mark 9:42 And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for

him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.

43 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than

having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

44 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

45 And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two

feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

46 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

47 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God

with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:

48 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

49 For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.

50 Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in

yourselves, and have peace one with another.

a. Note the three offenders: Hand, foot, and eye

Hand- What is the hand's role in sin?

of the trees of the garden:

3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden,

God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it,

lest ye die.

4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your

eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good

and evil.

6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food,

and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to

make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and

gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew

that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and

made themselves aprons.

b. Note the alternative to surrender to God's holiness:

Hell- New versions avoid hell. Strange- everyone knows

the word well.

Men avoid hell who are going there. Thus, the new

versions?

Who is in hell? Ans: The unholy Psalms 9:17; 2

Peter 2:4;

Rev. 19:20

Who controls hell? NOT Satan. God made hell Job

26:6;

Luke 12:5; Revelation 1:18

World likes Satan in charge in

hell-- Peter in heaven!

How long is hell? Check out the fire, vs. 43; Rev.

20:14; Jude vs. 7

Worms- This is the specific word for maggot.

Five words in Greek for Worm-- Jesus used one for

maggot.

Worms are symbolic of putrid death.

Some speculate that in hell men slowly devolve

(explain) until they are worms.

Why? To answer evolution and reincarnation.

First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics. Discuss.

In hell both laws will be in force? Very possibly, but

eternally!

Law One: Matter cannot be destroyed by the fire.

Law Two: Man devolves downward forever.

Hell is a pit- Revelation 9:1-11; 14:10-11; 11:7; 17:8;

20:1-3.

A pit with no bottom-- Either gravity is missing or they

fall forever.

Compare being on the North Pole-- all

directions are south.

Bottomless- all directions are down--

falling.

Hint at hell in the center of the earth.

If so, the rotation of the earth would

cause the sense of no bottom,

no upright position.

Discuss the feeling of falling. Nightmares like

that?

ILL Isa. 14:15-16-- Same pit. Note how all

can watch the process of their fall.

Smoke from fire and burning bodies.

Rev. 9:2- Locusts inhabit hell. Supernatural

locusts who thrive in smoke.

Company with the devil.

Fire- Jude vs. 7-- Suffering the vengeance are the point of

the fire.

Origin of fire in hell? It is NOT eternal. It is created.

Deuteronomy 32:21 They have moved me to jealousy with that

which is not God; they have provoked me to anger with their

vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are

not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish

nation.

22 For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the

lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and

set on fire the foundations of the mountains.

Lev. 10:1-3; Rev. 8:5- Wrath on false religion.

c. Holiness: How is it?

A true saint WANTS to be holy.

God saved us for that reason. Ephesians 1:4; 5:27;

1 Thess. 4:7

What is the object or pattern? 1 Peter 1:15-16; I

Sam. 2:1-2 !

[ Whole prayer if time ]

Nothing is too common to dedicate to the Lord-

Zechariah 14:20-

21.

What prevents us from being holy? 2 Corinthians 7:1

Who ultimately makes us holy? I Thes 3:12-13
