WORK WHICH IS NOT GOD'S WILL

By Steve Van Nattan

Introduction:

Ezekiel 22:26 Her priests have violated my law, and have profaned mine holy things: they have put no difference between the holy and profane, neither have they shewed difference between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them.

This article will probably get me into more trouble than nearly anything I ever wrote. For this reason, I have thought long and hard about what the Bible says about work. This way, I can refer you to the Lord of the Word, Who IS the Word, to do your griping. Basically, I don't want to hear you bellyache over this article. If, you see that the Word of God has you in trouble, repent. Don't write me and try to convince me to make a little niche for you where you may rebel. I have no such ministry.

Part One: Work that destroys marriages and kids

There are a number of very popular ways in which men and women, even in the farthest reaches of the Lord's Church, attack their own marriages and homes by their vocational choices. And, sad to say, many preachers will help them. Usually, the tithe increase of such disobedience is what charms pastors into looking the other way when his congregation violates biblical principles on work. Fundamentalists and Charismatics are very often guilty of this because they are obsessed with collecting money and sheering the sheep. So, I spare not as I do this article. Some of my best friends in the ministry are violently guilty at this point.

1. Defraud ye not one another

Husband and wife are not to leave off the sexual pleasure of the marriage chamber for ANY reason except to fast and pray for a short season. There are NO work reasons to suspend this teaching from your life if you are married. Read it:

1 Corinthians 7:2 Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.
3 Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband.
4 The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife.
5 Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency.

A husband who is out on the road, whether in a Peterbilt eighteen wheeler, or as a representative of a mission board, and his wife is at home deprived of sexual satisfaction for weeks on end-- That man is wicked and needs to find another job at once.

Preacher, you are a wimp and greedy hireling if you let this go on and on without getting into the thing. I will not let an evangelist or missions speaker near any pulpit for which I am responsible if the man's wife is not with him. I assume, until proven otherwise, that he is incontinent regarding sex. That goes for the over-the-road truck driver also. No one will convince me otherwise.

2. Go home in the evening

Second shift causes more dovorces that first shift or third shift. Why? Answer: Someone is at work when he should be at home, and later in bed, with his wife. I told you we would lean into it on this topic. If you cannot take the heat, get out of the kitchen.

You do NOT have to work second or third shift. You do so by choice. You could take a cut in pay and find other work. You just will not obey God regarding your priorities in vocation. Look what David said is the standard for a man at work-- Here is your God fearing shift:

Psalm 104:23 Man goeth forth unto his work and to his labour until the evening.

Was there a watchman on the wall throught the night in Jerusalem? Answer: Yes. That was a military task which was required by the nation. If you are drafted into the military and given night duty, that thing has been allowed by God. But, you have no business choosing it. But in another way, Israel had a standard of sexual satisfaction:

Deuternomy 24:5 When a man hath taken a new wife, he shall not go out to war, neither shall he be charged with any business: but he shall be free at home one year, and shall cheer up his wife which he hath taken.

Deuteronomy 20:7 And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.

Proverbs 5:15 Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well.
16 Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets.
17 Let them be only thine own, and not strangers' with thee.
18 Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.
19 Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.
20 And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger?
21 For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings
.

Pray tell, my friend, how on earth can you be satisfied by your wife's breasts when she sleeps when you work, and you sleep when she keeps the home? You will end up grabbing sexual satisfaction like you grab a cup of coffee running out the door. Men can get some measure of release out of that, but the wife does not do too well on rushed sex, right? I have to wonder how badly you really want to keep her, buster. Even if she is faithful to you, she will stay frustrated sexually for a long long time, maybe until you retire.

I personally have a theory that kids conceived in total sexual satisfaction, by both husband and wife, with graceful chivalry by the husband, unrushed and in godly order, after a biblical evening at home, are happier kids in the end. Mark it down-- Some research will prove me right one day.

3. Mamma stay home

Titus 2:3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

What is your duty to your husband, godly wife?

1 Samuel 1:19 And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the LORD, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her.

A man should be able to come home to enjoy his wife and children at the end of his day of work. His wife should also be eager to satisfy him. This way, the Lord remembers His promise to bless the home of a wife who is faithful to her husband. This standard is mocked by the world. It is the standard of the narrow way. You violate it to your peril and the destruction of your home and marriage.

And, it is impossible for a women to go to the market place in the morning, wrestle with the vile world of work, and come home in the evening, and at the same time; raise her children, keep the home, and be eager and ready for the marriage chamber in the evening.

IMPOSSIBLE, full stop, period, astonsihers, et al !!!!

This section will bring me the most E-Mail from this whole article. This is because women like to write me and schmooze me into approving of their rebellion against the Word of God. They hope that I will give them some special dispensation by which they can justify their rebellion. So, any such E-Mail MUST come from the lady's husband, pastor, or father. This way I can thrash the wimps without having to thump a lady :-) Furthermore; it is against biblical instruction for me to do this since it is the duty of the aged women.

4. Daughters stay home with your parents

Numbers 18:11 And this is thine; the heave offering of their gift, with all the wave offerings of the children of Israel: I have given them unto thee, and to thy sons and to thy daughters with thee, by a statute for ever: every one that is clean in thy house shall eat of it.

The pastor of a girl before marriage is FIRST her father. The problems you think up are the exception, not the rule. The Old Testament father was the teacher and guardian of his daughter, and nothing has changed. So, daughters must stay home under the protection of their father. This notion that a daughter should go into the marketplace, come under another authority, and work for a living, is blasphemy.

Preacher, why would you promote this, and then suggest the lady go home and be a wife without working outside the home after she is married. Why this venture into the working world to be confronted by filthy men and hear the grubby stories her father would never allow? Who are YOU, preacher, to condone this arrogant violation of the biblical model of God? Ah, but the added tithe... That is why your wimp out on this issue, right?

5. The work of the ministry

Traveling evangelists and missionaries

Where did we ever get this notion that a man can leave his wife and wander about the nation for weeks if he is an evangelist or a missionary? What Bible text can you find which allows this violation of the teaching in I Corinthians?

1 Corinthians 7:2 Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.
3 Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband.
4 The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife.
5 Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency.

We have a classic example, though mentioned in passing in another context, which broadly hints at the rightness of expecting a godly man to take his wife with him when he works away from home.

1 Corinthians 9:4 Have we not power to eat and to drink?
5 Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?

Personal story

I learned this the hard way. Our family was on furlough from Ethiopia in the 1970s. We had made the trip from Michigan to Pennsylvania to visit supporters, and one of our children howled and bawled everywhere we went, when traveling, and just about any time we got into the car to go even a block. We next had a trip to California to make to visit supporters, so we decided I should go alone so that we would not all go mad from the howling. The brat was also fond of wailing through all the services where I was trying to speak about the work we did on the field.

So, I planned a six week tour, speaking at every opportunity. I thought I should take every meeting I could since I was alone, and I reasoned that if I kept myself a bit strung out, it would also keep me out of trouble since I was indeed away from my wife.

It worked, and I nearly had a heart attack doing it. By the time I was in Dallas, I was having heart arrhythmia, and the mission rep in Dallas told me to call a Christian doctor. He asked a couple of questions and then told me I was in trouble because my trip away from home was way too long, and he said I was in trouble also because I was away from my wife and kids. He promised me the symptoms would go away as I returned to Michigan.

I caught on real quick, but the California meetings were waiting, and I felt I could not cancel on visiting those churches. The work, very worthy work at that, drove me along, and I felt I was under some obligation to God to keep at it. Dumb idea, right? But, at the time I felt so self-sacrificial and worthy as I headed from Texas to California.

You know another thing that bothered me? I would stop and have a great time in some point of interest, and I would then remember Elizabeth back in Michigan probably ready to strangle our little howler. I felt mostly guilt every time I enjoyed myself. And I should have, as I see it now.

In California the smog and pollen combined with my struggle of being alone, and I became a basket case. I had to take a heavy dose of Dristan before every meeting, and then I would be half asleep while I was preaching. I had a terrible time taking an interest in people, even the ones I knew.

God was merciful. At Pico Rivera Bible Church, I was about as messed up as any stop along the line. It was a new church, and I told the pastor he should really pray for me since I was in such a bad state with the allergies and inner struggles. The dear brother cried out to God for me, and when I gave the invitation to dedication at the end of the message-- I had preached that sermon about forty times already and felt like a broken record-- When I gave the invitation, I remember three fourths of the congregation standing instantly.

I have never felt so totally NOT part of what God was using me for. Do you understand what I mean? I was already planning to skip the last week of meetings at a big college missions conference, and head for home. Yet, God, in His sweet way, let me have a great measure of blessing in that last meeting. I almost lost it completely. I was so devastated with myself, yet God had used me. I think I got a lot more out of that visit than anyone there, and the pastor was also deeply moved to see God's mercy to me.

But, I made a promise to God that I would never leave home without my wife again. If that ever happened, He would have to be the one to force the issue for His reasons. As I headed home, my symptoms started going away. By Montana, my eyes and heart were back to normal, and by the time I arrived in Michigan, I was nearly 100% "cured." I had sublimated the lust of the flesh, but what a price I paid!

Since that experience, I have determined that I will never approve of any man willfully leaving home and his wife, no matter how worthy the cause. That especially applies to evangelists and Christian leaders. A couple of days to speak in a church over the weekend I can tolerate, but a career of leaving Mom and the kids is evil and a pointed violation of the Word of God.

By the way, Billy Sunday did this over his whole career as an evangelist. Many souls were saved, but every one of his kids became an atheist and alcoholic. What a price to pay, and what a mindless violation of God's direct command from Paul.

6. Eat the fat and drink the sweet, OR Come apart

Nehemiah 8:10 Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.

Leisure is not evil. A lot of Fundamentalists, after the celebration in the context, would have held a church business meeting and move the previous question until late in the night. Not Nehemiah-- He sent them home to take their leisure and have a feast AT HOME. Families need to rest from labor, and (I shall need to duck as I say the following) sometimes the saints need a rest from the programs and tension caused by over zealous preachers. If pastors really valued the homes of their people, those pastors would encourage families to have times in their homes instead of always at the church house.

7. Suffer the little children

Matthew 19:13 Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them.
14 But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.
15 And he laid his hands on them, and departed thence.

Jesus did not send out camels driven by camel pastors to pick up the kids and bring them in. They were brought to Jesus, undoubtedly, by their parents or relatives. Children should be brought to Christ by those who care for them, not in mass transit programs complete with free hamburgers and dollar bills hidden in the seats of the bus.

Now, this gets tricky, for it means that parents are the ideal ones to bring children to Jesus, and that implies that the church should be trying to get Dads and Moms saved first. They will then bring the kids to Jesus. That is a lot more work and investment in lives than sending busses up and down the roads once a week. You see, to get the kids' Dads saved, men in the church have to make friends of these Dads, work on them, do things with them, and one day they may well accept Christ as their Savior.

Thus, lazy preachers and their lazy leaders buy busses and con poor stiffs into driving those busses to do easy evangelism. The reality is, that bus is a real blessing to the working agnostic and his wife, for they have free day care Sunday morning while they sleep in.

In Acts 8 we see that Philip was plenty busy, but the Lord told him to drop everything and go to the dessert and meet ONE man. This resulted in the eunuch being saved, and the Gospel was taken to Ethiopia. To this day there is a form of godliness in Ethiopia still there as a result of that one soul saved. Too bad old Philip didn't send a camel caravan to Ethiopia and bring all the eunuch's kids up to Samaria to Sunday School.

Now, here is the blessing of the biblical plan. Instead of being "bus pastors," these men can bring their own families to Sunday School. Instead of dragging out to the church house at ten below zero, starting a sluggish frozen bus engine, and driving all over town while his family goes to church without him, he can be the leader of his home. Sunday morning may be the only morning in the week when your "bus pastor" can be with his family, preacher. You have NO business hyping such a program which destroys that rare chance to be together as a family.

8. Given to hospitality

1 Timothy 3:1 This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. 2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;

If a pastor, or any church leader, is too busy to open his home to the saints of the assembly, he ought to find another church. We have heard of board members being removed from leadership for getting into a divorce situation, but when is the last time you heard of and board member being removed for not being given to hospitality? If your time at the church house keeps you so busy that you have no time left to entertain your fellow saints, and a few folks you are witnessing to, you are working too much somewhere. And, it is probably at the church house.

The early church met only in homes. Hospitality was the hallmark of the early church. Historians from that era told how the believers would all get a church dinner ready, and then they would take it to the courtyard of some sinner they were witnessing to, and invite themselves in. This tactic was very successful. You never heard of that "program" did you? We think we are so clever down here at the far end of the Dispensation of Grace, but I think we have a lot to learn about what is important. One thing which is critically important is to work honorably, but not so much that we don't have time left to do soul winning (NOT door to door) and spend some time with the saints, WITHOUT destroying our families while we do so.

Part Two: Work that is dishonorable

Story: Ebeling

There was a fellow named Ebeling who worked the crap tables in Reno, Nevada in the casinos. He was good at it, and he learned to completely control the "take" for the house, and let the gamblers win enough to keep them coming. We went to see him one evening after he got saved, and you would have to see his tricks to believe them. He could roll a pair of dice time after time, with one hand, and every time he rolled them they were a different color. He also could shuffle a deck of cards, set them down for a gambler to cut the deck, and in one natural sweep of his hand as he picked them up, he would change the cut deck for another one all loaded and ready to win on his terms, AND you could not see him do it. But I am getting ahead of myself.

Mr. Ebeling went from Reno to Los Angeles one day to go to a meeting he was invited to. At the meeting he heard the Gospel, and he accepted Christ as his Savior. Well, Mr. Ebeling was at once a changed man for the most part, and he wanted to serve the Lord with zeal.

Mr. Ebeling didn't know what he could do to serve the Lord, but he soon realized he did have one unique skill he could use for God-- He could collect money off of people. He began to take the maximum allowed at the crap tables and at blackjack. Mr. Ebeling started taking lots of extra cash all week, and then he would drive to LA Saturday evening, go to church Sunday morning, and with great joy dump a windfall into the offering plate.

Well, the pastor, being wise, soon figured out who was giving all the cash in the offering. Unlike some greedy beggars I have known, this pastor was alarmed. But, this pastor was also eager not to discourage Mr. Ebeling, so he approached him and asked if he was the one who was adding all the cash to the offering. Mr. Ebeling at once agreed, and he told the pastor he was just delighted to finally have a good thing he could do for the Lord with his talents as a blackjack dealer.

Well, the wise pastor did not thump this new believer at once, but he taught him from the Word of God about honorable work, and soon Mr. Ebeling quit his job in Reno. The Casino owners tried to kill Mr. Ebeling for a while since they were terrified of what he could tell the gambling commission and the Feds about gambling practices. In the end, Mr. Ebeling had a ministry going to churches and showing all the tricks. He taught people how stupid gambling was, and he witnessed the power of the Gospel to save men like himself.

Is your job the kind of work you might catch Jesus doing?

Work which enhances sin:

Booze and Tobacco:

Any saint who willfully helps anyone trash their mind and body with strong drink and tobacco has NO business calling for holiness in anyone else. If you do this, your kids will think it is OK to smoke because you are too big a wimp to deal with your choices.

Deuteronomy 24:4 Her former husband, which sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after that she is defiled; for that is abomination before the LORD: and thou shalt not cause the land to sin, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.

We have friends in Michigan who own a meat market. They decided to add groceries and a medium sized selection of general super market products. They chose a supplier to deliver these products, and the supplier sent an advance man to see what they wanted to carry. The man was almost in a rage when they said they didn't want to carry tobacco and alcohol. They prevailed.

The supplier's second man came, and he was the one who set up the first order and marketing strategy. When our friends told him of their zeal to not sell tobacco and alcohol, and how the first men had behaved, the second fellow laughed and told them they would make MORE money selling cookies and other snacks on the ends of the aisle. He also told them that the Feds would leave them alone since they would not be suspect of selling controlled items to minors.

Don't tell me you have to sell sin to stay in business. You don't have the right God if that is your alibi.

I have a little rhyme now for you Fundamental farmers.

This is the malt
In the gunny sack
From the deacon's farm
That was bought by Bud-dumber
That went in the vat
To make the beer
That was served in the bar
Where Jack went.

Hmmmmmmm

Proverbs 20:1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

Motels:

Motels are a very hard place to make a living. If you work for a chain company, you will be told how to cut corners on cleanliness, and you will not be able to hire clean people. If you own the motel, you will be able to set the standards, and you will not make it because of the corner cutting competition. Beware of this profession.

Delivery trucks:

Most of us think of beer trucks and tobacco venders. But, how about those junk food trucks full of cupcakes which will taste fresh after sitting in the sun on a shelf for two weeks? The chemicals and adverce ingredients in nearly all junk food makes it a serious question whether a Bible believer should serve up this trash. The fact that people WANT it is no excuse. Some people WANT porn also, but you would not serve that to them, right? Beware of delivering garbage on purpose and as you vocation.

Entertainment:

There is not one text in the word of God to indicate that God's people, whether in the Old or New Testament, needed entertainment. In Jesus' day, there was much entertainment available, as there was in Paul's day in the various cities he visited. Yet, neither Jesus, nor his Apostles entertained anyone EVER! To spend you life amusing people, even if the amusement is in some alleged "Christian" setting, is a perfect waste of a life.

Solomon had untold wealth, and he showed no interest in anything more than having a merry heart. His love for the Shulamite in Song of Solomon showed that the choice way to enjoy oneself is with one's spouse. How tragic it is that so many saints run away from their bedchambers to get the warm fuzzies from some performance, and they are too tired when they get home to enjoy sexual pleasure with one another. AND, if you are the one performing, you are part of the problem.

And, if you are the preacher who books all these groupies, and you help close down the sanctified bedchamber, you are an hireling who scatters the sheep by running an amusement park at the church house.

Anyone who works for a cable company should repent and find other work. In the USA this is the single biggest source of sensual lust and evil, and in Europe it is even worse than in the US.

Acts 24:16 And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.

Bureaucracy:

Inspectors-
These people are seen as nags, and, in modern life in most countries, they ARE nags. They are always looking for a bug under the chip, and they usually find one, even if it is imaginary. So, how is this vocation going to endear you to the sinners in your area as you also try to win souls? These things are all choices, but it is the little foxes that spoil the vines.

Tax Collecting-
Jesus called a tax collector FROM the office of tax TO service to Messiah. Tax is not evil-- It is essential. The problem is that in modern life tax money is used to support all manner of filthy sexual perversion and abortion. Do you want the feeling of helping this system? Some folks have to collect sales tax if they sell things at retail. But, sales tax is seldom used for perversions and abortion as is national taxation. Sales tax is used to build schools and roads and local needs of states and cities. But, if you see the sales tax going to support sin and wickedness, then you may want to pray to the Lord and ask if this is a choice you need to deal with.

Secret Service-
I have a piano tuning customer who was a secret service agent for the Kennedy's through the Reagan era. He told of having to do duty for the sole purpose of guarding these people while they were being unfaithful to each other and doing immoral acts. This is NOT a decent way to make a living.

Proverbs 1:11 If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause:
12 Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit:
13 We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil:
14 Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse:
15 My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:

Guard work-
What are you guarding, and who are you gurading? If you would not participate in the thing you are guarding, or if the people are mongrels you would never want your kids to be around, then why are you watching over the scum? You do have choice, and YOU will answer to God for those choices.

Manufacturing:

Shoddy goods-
We had a friend who worked in a mail order plant and bulb company which shipped vast quantities of plants all over the USA. Their brochures were very convincing, but the inside story was disgusting. This company would ship bulbs which were literally rotting already, knowing that customers would return them. If they did return them, the company would send good ones. If the rotting bulbs were not returned, because the customer found it too much bother to do so, then the company was able to get a profit for sending out pure garbage. Out friend quit. So should you if you are in a company which manufactures ANYTHING you and they know is a piece of trash.

Luke 6:38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

Dangerous food-
If you are working for a food operation which makes trash food which you KNOW is not healthy, and if you would not eat the stuff, you are a hypocrite. I always like to know if the people I buy food from actually eat the stuff themselves. I buy vegetables from Mexico from shippers in Nogales, Arizona during the winter. I was leary at first to do this until I learned that the people in the trade in Nogales think these vegetables are safer than the ones raised in the USA. This is because the US vegies are not inspected, while the USDA is very fussy about these imported vegies.

Are you making food items you would not eat or feed your kids? You are wicked-- Repent!

Romans 12:17 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.

Compromised "Christian" organizations:

You are working in the book keeping department of a mission which is ecumenical and totally washed out as to the preaching of the Gospel. Why would you want to stay there? You say, "Hey, it is just a job. I don't have to approve of them. I just make a living there." You wimp! EVERYTHING in your life counts. So, you teach a Sunday School class in a Fundamental church? That is one day a week. Five days a week you help the devil dumb down the Lord's Church. Get a life friend.

2 Peter 2:18 For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.

1 Corinthians 10:32 Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:

2 Corinthians 6:3 Giving no offence in any thing, that the ministry be not blamed:

2 Timothy 3:5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

Work which invites dishonesty:

Taking favors from Caesars on the farm:

I used to visit the Hilltop Cafe back in our town in Michigan, and many of the local farmers would come there for coffee during the morning. They would often get onto the way ethnic and "white trash" young women in big cities would have babies in order to get ADC Federal Support money. Well, that is a genuine problem, but were these farmers the right ones to judge?

Bill Veltkamp was sitting there at the big round table in the cafe one day during a year when the US Government invented a thing called Payment In Kind, or PIK farming. The Feds would pay a farmer "in kind" for not farming, milking cattle, or raising hogs, among other tricks. A good number of these farmers were "on the take" for their share of the tax base as PIK farmers. Bill Veltkamp had about had it with all the complaining about ADC and welfare dependents. So, he cut them off and said, "You guys are on ADC." To which a loud complaint arose. "How do you figure that Bill?" Bill said, "How about Aid to Dependent Corn, and Aid to Dependent Cows, or Aid to Dependent cabbage?"

Are YOU making a living by taking cash from Caesar in order to stop working and sit in the cafe and blabber? Some men will take payment to not work land, then they will get a second job and make double incomes. Is that how you "provide things honest in the sight of all men?" This is dishonest work, and you know it friend.

Isaiah 1:23 Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them.

Sales:

Insurance-
I have heard them all. Term life insurance is such a great idea, while other insurance is safer, and you need a plan for burial, and on and on. Insurance sales is one of the most deadly places for a Bible believer, for you will be pushed to your bosses with threats and incentives to over insure people. ALL companies claim they don't do this, then they do it. Don't con me friend. Also, you never heard of an insurance salesman who told anyone to go to their competitor to get a better deal.

Doug does this at Carquest in Newaygo, Michigan with car parts. Lots of hardware people do it all the time. I do it in my piano parts sales. But, insurance people can get fired for sending someone to another company.

Also, in car sales, and in other insured situations, the insured party is told vehemently to hide the truth, especially if they were to blame in an accident, and YOU will do this or die financially. Get a life friend.

Psalm 58:2 Yea, in heart ye work wickedness; ye weigh the violence of your hands in the earth.

Phone sales-
You cannot do phone sakes without doing two things:

A. You have to hide the truth about your product or lie about the competition. Most articulate people who receive these phone calls know that the pressure of phone sales is a calculated and devious art. Why would you want to practice that which Jesus forbid?

B. You interrupt many people when they would like to be left alone. It takes a very brazen mindless person to go on doing this and imagining they are doing someone some good and pleasing God.

Eccl. 5:6 Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands?

Advertising-
Advertising is prone to lies. If you are making a purse of a pig's ear, you are a liar, and your vocation will bring you only shame. Much of selling is based upon perception rather than substance, and the Bible speaks directly to that issue.

John 7:24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.

If you are helping engineer appearances which deceive, you are a wicked judge, and the Judge in the Glory will have a word with you one day.

Matthew 23:25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.

2 Corinthians 8:21 Providing for honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.

Services-
I am in a service-- I tune pianos. There is a real blessing in a service if you own the business, for you can set you hours better, and you don't have a human boss, well at least none beside the IRS :-)

If you are in a service where you work as an employee of a company, the story is often the very opposite. You will find you are encouraged to do the following:

1. Hype the work. Once you are on site, you must find something to do, even if you don't know what is actually wrong with the customer's water heater or computer.

2. Sell. You are to fix the problem, and then convince the customer that they need some other device or product to make sure life is safe from terror in the future.

3. Cheat on hours. You may be told to diddle around acting like the job needs to take four hours when you could fix it in half and hour.

4. Make work for the future. Though this is the least common, some companies will actually encourage you to leave work undone. Just get the device operating, but leave things undone so the customer will call you soon to do the rest. At that time, you will have to feed them a cock and bull story about why the thing "went down" again, even blaming the customer.

If any of this sounds like how you are asked to function, you are a thief. Repent! Get a real job friend.

Philippians 1:10 That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ;

Romans 13:7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

Story: Glen T_______

I had a friend during college days named Glen Toews. He was eager to make a good income, and he figured he could sell used cars. He had a good way with words, and he was not shy, so he had as good a chance as anyone to succeed.

A used car dealer in the area hired him, and he went through a period of training when he made very little. At the end of that time, he was told he would be getting a commission from then on for any cars that closed as a result of his sales work. The first thing he learned was that the experienced car dealers kept cutting in on his customers and offering to help him. If he let them, they would get the commission. He finally convinced them to leave him alone by threats to fink on them to the owner.

From that point onward, the older salesmen targeted Glen for destruction. He was supposed to make no money and enjoy their thievery of his income. One day a customer asked Glen if he had any late model Thunderbirds. In those days Thunderbirds were not just another way to bend a Ford. They were totally unique in the 1950s, and they were a luxury sporty car.

Glen knew he had a Thunderbird on the lot, but he knew it was a real disaster. He had driven it to lunch one day, and when he turned sharply either way, the thing shuddered bad. He asked one of the employees if they should check it over, and they told him it had been in a train wreck, and it had been fixed as well as it ever would be. Glen was horrified that the car was not junked. It was dangerous.

The customer saw the Thunderbird, and he decided it was just what he was looking for. Glen tried to suggest a very sporty model of Oldsmobile. The customer would not change his mind, so Glen suggested they take it for a ride. Glen told the man to turn at the last minute, first one way, then the other. The customer got very upset. He asked Glen what was wrong with the car, and Glen confided that it had been in a train wreck.

The customer was so impressed with Glen's integrity that when they got back to the car lot, the customer asked to drive the Oldsmobile, for he now wanted Glen's suggestion more than he wanted his own preferences. Just as they were getting into the car, up walks one of the tricky salesmen. He asked the customer why he was not buying the Thunderbird. The customer became a bit thoughtless at that point and said, "I don't want a car that has been in a train wreck." Well, you can guess what happened next. Glen was cashiered out of that place at once.

This is the world of sales, but it is typical of the market place today. The vast majority of jobs out there involve various compromises if you are going to succeed. A Christian MUST be willing to walk away to keep his conscience clear. God will help you find a job that does not violate your conscience.

There is a very new and startling innovation coming into the market place very recently. It is called honest business. It is being touted as a new and radical notion, and business magazines are talking about this like it as a brand fired new thing never before seen in modern business. And, they are right. Integrity in business is terrifying to about 89% of all businessmen. Sam Walton, who developed the Walmart Store chain, was a virtual freak in the business world in his day, and he was rewarded for his down home honest ethics by becoming the richest man in the USA at one time. He was a legend. You CAN be honest and succeed, but it is a choice, and you have to go after it the hard way.

Work which promotes violence:

Psalm 11:5 The LORD trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth.

There are sports which are well known to be violent, like boxing and ice hockey. One man said, "I went to the fights, and an ice hockey game broke out." Other nations outside the USA have some very violent amusements, like bull fighting and cock fights.

Whether men fight with men, or animals are destroyed for the amusement of people, a Bible believer has no business making a living by providing violence for other men. This is the very opposite of the saints in the Word of God. Look here:

James 3:17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

If you think you can grow mature in Chirst by being like this on Sunday, then going to work in the promotion of violence all week, you are self-deluded my friend. I will show you the extreme;

Matthew 26:52 Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.

Work which is mere amusement:

I have known a number of people who worked for amusement parks like Disneyland. This is a waste of a life. What can you look back on with pride? You are part of Vanity Fair. Don't give me any of this drivel about giving people a way to get away and relax and enjoy themselves. If you really believe that rot, then go sign up for the Forest Service, and help people learn how to see the Creator in His Creation. You only have ONE life here, and I seriously doubt if your vocational works will survive the fire of Christ's holiness, at the judgment of your works, when you tell Him you were a train engineer on the Mountain Railway at Six Flags Over America. Wippy doo!!!!

Nehemiah 13:26 Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did outlandish women cause to sin.

Proverbs 14:18 The simple inherit folly: but the prudent are crowned with knowledge.

Eccl. 1:17 And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.

Eccl. 10:1 Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour.

Work which degrades men and women:

When a work place is based on feminist notions, YOU do not belong there. When the work area degrades women by encouraging them to talk filthy, YOU do not belong there. When YOU have to tolerate filth and God hatred as a way of life in the work place, YOU do not belong there. When YOU have to tolerate hustling women, or sodomite men, in order to keep your job, find another job. You cannot discriminate against these people. You are the one discriminated against as they demand that you sublimate your love for Jesus Christ and holy living, so just LEAVE!

Leviticus 19:13 Thou shalt not defraud thy neighbour, neither rob him: the wages of him that is hired shall not abide with thee all night until the morning.

1 Corinthians 6:8 Nay, ye do wrong, and defraud, and that your brethren.

1 Thessalonians 4:6 That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified.

Work which destroys God's creation needlessly:

Clear cutting a 500 year old forest is not noble. Aside from the Gaia tree hugging notions, a man better think long and hard before he destroys something God created and which is hundreds of years old. We are to be "keepers" of the Garden of God, not destroyers. I have noted that there is almost ALWAYS an alternative to this sort of destructive situation, and greedy godless men are too lazy and demonized to bother with the alternative.

I Personally feel that a man who destroys very old landmarks, even though they were made by men, must consider what he is doing. Europe has many very old landmarks which bring up a sense of history in the new generations. The USA has very few landmarks because we make no provision to preserve them. I saw a cross country byciclist the other day. He was stopped at a pull out reading one of those bronze plaques describing what used to stand on that geographical point. What inspiration! A plaque inbedded in a pile of rocks. This could be the footnote on YOUR life-- "He destroyed all the old landmarks."

Psalm 90:16 Let thy work appear unto thy servants, and thy glory unto their children.

Job 24:2 Some remove the landmarks; they violently take away flocks, and feed thereof.

Work which is silly:

A Friend of our family worked in a factory where they made party decorations. He told of all the automated machines he had made, and how valuable he had been to the company. The legacy of his working life ALL went out in the trash after the party was over.

Luke 8:15 But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.

Serving Caesar:

Military Service:

It used to be that a US military man was called a "soldier." That meant he served his country and did what it took to defend America and do a job of work that the military was assigned to do. It could be to defend the USA, or it could be to try to stop a levee on the Mississippi from bursting its banks.

Today, military people are called "War Makers." These people are virtual mercenaries, and they are filled with ego based on the fact that they are trained killers. When I was in the service, there was a move to rein in the killer instinct and promote the idea of doing a job of work for freedom. This was the idea, even though we were at the height of the Vietnam era. Somehow, someone in high places decided recently that we need to emphasize the killer instinct.

In spite of this policy, the average American soldier is soft. I have many stories I have gathered from Desert Storm, Kosovo, and my customers on Fort Huachuca to prove my case. The US Military is also run through with feminist terror-- I have SEEN it. Add to this the fact that the US Military is recruiting the dregs of society during these days of great prosperity, as is every European nation without exception. Some European military men look like baboons, not even being required to cut their hair. They are the social rubbish of their various nations.

If you join the US Army or Marines in particular, you will find yourself dealing with fellow soldiers who criminal types, and the sexual perversion among men and men, and among men and women is beyond belief. And, finally, you will be strongly encouraged to be promiscuous. Barracks are co-ed in many places, and sharing tents is SOP in war zones. Nakedness in desert duty is accepted. It is a mongrel mob, and a Bible believer does NOT belong there.

You will give me a line of bologna that good people need to enter the service to save it. I will then tell you that godly people need to send their daughters to work in whore houses to save them. Same dumb logic friend. Even the chaplaincy is a total disaster. During my two years in the Army I met ONE chaplain, out of about 100 who came and went at Fort Knox, who had a real testimony for Christ. That testimony got him a bad Officer's Efficiency Report at the hands of a Black American Baptist agnostic chaplain. You cannot be a military man in the New World Order and stay right with the Lord Jesus Christ. Mark it down.

Proverbs 21:27 The sacrifice of the wicked is abomination: how much more, when he bringeth it with a wicked mind?

Jeremiah 22:17 But thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy covetousness, and for to shed innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it.

Romans 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

Psalm 73:6 Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain; violence covereth them as a garment.

Investigative Agencies:

In order to be a successful private investigator, or an agent for a Federal investigative agency, you have to be a deceiver and totally committed to "do what it takes" to find the information. This means lying, misrepresenting, deceiving, and betraying innocent people. You are a wicked alien from the narrow way if you are one of these.

Isaiah 28:8 For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness, so that there is no place clean.

Part Three: "Burdens too heavy to bear" (A rebuke of mindless pastors)

This is now the part of this article which is more aimed at greedy sheep shearing pastors. Many pastors are the worst home destroyers Satan has in his employ, and I know pastors who have destroyed many homes by pulling husbands and wives away from each other and away from their kids. Too many pastors lust first for money, then for a reputation and resume, and finally for women in the church. By the time they are caught, they have done massive damage to many homes and turned deacons' kids into atheists. The wreckage in the wake of such hirelings is tremendous, so here goes. Brace yourself preacher, for I am about to strip you of all your pious blabber.

Matthew 23:4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

VBS, Sunday School, and Awana

Every year VBS comes and goes, and for that week, or two weeks, a man loses his wife. Every Sunday morning, the same lady leaves for the church house before her husband to get the church ready for the mob of kids the 'bus pastors" have rounded up. The operation dwarfs a military invasion in some churches. Later in the evening, this lady has to go early to church to get ready for the evening "Bible Institute." She is called up to the Women's Missionary society leadership because she can be counted on. She is also drawn into all manner of dealings where ladies are gathered. And, finally, she takes three days a week as the church secretary or phone receptionist.

[ Read slowly preacher-- We are NOT pulling any punches here. ]

One day, the old man can take it no longer. His wife is never home when he really has time to rest, which may only be on Sunday, what with over time on Saturday. When he finally gets time to make love to his wife, she is exhausted and distracted, and she has not come to climax in years. The old man starts "looking around," and YOU preacher, profess to be shocked. You wicked hypocrite!

The church prays the man will repent. His wife dives even deeper into church life. And, one day, YOU preaher, decide the man's life is so vile that there is no other solution than divorce. You should be cast into hell preacher. You are a home destroyer.

This is why I have no use for a church over the size of 150. Anything larger devours homes. Very few preachers can resist the urge to get bigger and bigger, and they consume homes to do it.

If you are a lady deeply involved in such a scene, you are intentionally and willfully destroying your marriage and inviting your kids to go to hell in a handbasket. Get OUT of the church vocation, and go home and be a wife and mother again. Let the preacher whine. They are good at that, and it is meant to cause you guilt. Send that MAN God gave you to tell the preacher to back off. If he won't, change churches. You owe nothing do a family destroyer.

2 Thessalonians 3:13 But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.

Luke 10:40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.
41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:

Leadership

OK, fellows, it's YOUR turn.

God gave you a good wife and some good kids. So, how did you ever get the idea that you had to leave home all week long, night after night, and all day Sunday, to nurse along a wimpy preacher who leans on YOU and won't call other men into the leadership? Where did you get this idea that YOU are critical to the spiritual prosperity of the local church.

You must have a spiritual gift or two if you are born again. Target the one or two things that fit your gifts, and do those things. But, you are CALLED to put your family in first place after the Lord. You are NOT obligated to make a local church fly if few others will help in the work.

Maybe the problem is YOU. Your wife is under your authority, she is home being a faithful home maker, and she is raising your kids to love the Lord. But, YOU are the problem. The reason she has not enjoyed the bedchamber is because YOU are the one AWOL from the bed. You think the direction of church affairs is more important than servicing your wife.

You, sir, are a jerk. Read that again-- I chose each work with care.

Go home mister, and be a real man where it counts most. Tell your pastor you will not be doing all those things anymore, just the few things which you are gifted for. If the preacher is a good man, he will understand. If he is also a jerk, go find another church, or start a house church.

It is this kind of editorial which guarantees that I will probably never be called to pastor another church. Do you know why? Well, this may shock you. Pulpit committees call men to pastor churches who will do exactly what I have described-- Find a couple of hard working men, put them under guilt, and use them like slaves to keep the program going. This way, these leaders who "call" pastors can shuck off all the work onto the pastor and his two, or even ONE, slave. I don't care if this dooms me to never pastor a church again if it saves a few families and makes some kid see his Dad a little more. So be it, and the devil take the hindmost flake pastor.

1 Corinthians 12:8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.
13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
14 For the body is not one member, but many.

1 Timothy 3:12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.

Ball teams

"We have to have your pitching arm to win the tournament, brother." This flattery may even be true. What will it take you away FROM? So, the pastor thinks you are indispensable to the ball team. Tell me something brother-- Where is playing ball, or any sport, part of the plan of God from Genesis to the Revelation of John?

I bet you have the pat answer: "Times have changed." You are a liar friend. Times will always be subject to the Word of God.

So, I hear the next one: "God can use anything to win souls." Fine buster, so let's find a belly dancer from the strip downtown, and let's print John 3:16 on her belly, and then put her up front of the church on a men's night, and tell her to strip. Every man there will sure pay attention, AND they will all get to read John 3:16. Oh, now you don't like your logic so well do you?

If you MUST play ball, take your kids to the park, invite some unsaved kids from your neighbored, and make friends with a view to do some real soul winning. Church ball teams are VERY short on evangelism and long on interrupting your family life.

Preacher, there is no greater drain on zeal and energy than to direct it into play and amusement. Read that again and weep for your day at the judgment of your works. Sack that stupid sports program-- It draws flies, as in Beelzebub. I know this from EVERY church team I have ever seen. Put that energy into soul winning and family nights and events like church sings. Or, are you too dumb to see how those things edify, and winning against the Whiskepalians is NOT God honoring.

1 Timothy 4:8 For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.

There is NO article in front of "little." This implies that bodily exercise is nearly pointless.

Bus pastors

The pastor found out you have a chauffeur's license, and he just KNEW you should be a "bus pastor." Well, here's news for you friend.

First, the Apostle Paul did NOT have a camel ministry to bring in a zillion kids to the church services in Ephesus. He could have. There is no such thing in church history until the modern church movement decided that numbers are the measure of the local church's success.

Second, there is no such thing in the New Testament as a "bus pastor." You have been given a phony title in order to massage your ego and make you think you have some special ministry.

Third, the church grows best when parents BRING the kids, and Dads lead families to church. You are helping build the local church in a way NOT found in the Bible anywhere. The little kids being brought to Jesus were brought by there parents, so let's not hear any tripe about how this is what you are doing. YOU should be bringing YOUR children to Jesus, or Sunday School.

If the back seats of the church leaders' cars are empty when they arrive at church, then they are a bunch of spiritual wimps to ask you to crawl out at five AM and try to get that old wreck to start at 10 below. Find another church friend. Find some people who respect your minsitry as pastor of your own home first.

"My kids understand," you say. Right, sir. They understand that the life of Christian is to give up his family, time after time, because there are obligations to God and the church which are more important than being a family. It don't sound too good do it? Think on these things my friend.

1 Thessalonians 4:11 And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;

You don't know your wife very well sir if you think she likes to get the kids out the door and go to church without you leading the way like a real man. Here is why I say that:

1 Peter 3:7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

Church Secretary

2 Timothy 3:6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,

Every time I walk into a local church and find a married woman, or a single woman for that matter, doing the secretary work for the church, I get mad. I usually don't throw a fit in order to avoid making a scene, but I shall do so here for your edification :-)

ALL of the men down yonder at the tabernacle in Israel were, er, men. That was not too hard to figure out, right? All of the men at the temple of Solomon were, er, well here we are again, MEN! All of the apostles took helpers along as far as we know, and they were all men.

Jesus didn't have a secretary, nor did Paul. The Lord's Church for about 1800 years did not have church secretaries. How did we come up with the doctrinaire notion that we HAVE to have such offices, and how did we come up with the idea that women should do this task?

Dear lady, if you have left your home to be a church secretary, for even one day, you are in violation of Proberbs 31, for you are not doing the work God gave married women to do. Furthermore; you are a rebel against this instructions from the New Testament:

Titus 2:3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

Dear lady in Christ-- GO HOME and be the wife and mother God called you to be. If that preacher thinks you are so indispensable, will you tell me something please, where in the Bible did he show you that you can leave your home, get out from under your husband's leadership over you, and you come under the authority of another man. Oh, you say, "He is a great men of God." So what? That is fine, but if he WAS a real man of God, he would NOT allow a woman, other than his wife, to be under his authority. Get right lady. You are arrogantly OUT of God's will for you. Buy your preacher a memo pad, a database software program, and GO HOME to stay.

One preacher in a very large church got so in need of his secretary's help that she ended up servicing his libido as well. This is such an old story now in so many churches that I marvel that a sane godly man would allow his wife (or daughter) to be caught filling the non-biblical office of church secretary.

Preacher, if you really NEED a church secretary, why not a man, perhaps a retired man? Serving at the tabernacle or temple was not demeaning to the men of Israel. David said he would be content to be a door keeper in the house of God.

Preacher, I will now tell you why you need a woman church secretary. You have a low view of women. You have cultivated an anti-feminist attitude, which is perfectly OK in this twisted era of feminazi rights. But, you have allowed this anti-feminism to make a fictitious distinction between what a woman should do and what a man should do with regard to office work. There is NO way you can show me, from the King James Bible, that a church secretary has to be a woman, or even COULD be.

SEND MAIL and try. In Christian charity, I will take you to the wood shed if you do.

As a matter of fact preacher, you LIKE that good looking church secretary don't you? It is nice to have the charming lady there. Your wife is still dragging around the house collecting laundry and starting home schooling, not very dolled up for you, looking like a busy faithful housewife. Meanwhile; that pretty church secretary is waltzing into the foyer looking like a Christian version of a cover girl. You won't ever climb into bed with her, mind you, but you appreciate her husband sharing her with you. Get right you sleazy hireling! You are promoting a Platonic version of adultery-- nothing less. First look, second look, followed by eight thousandth look, and your mind is a cesspool of lust.

Not fair? Well, even if you have avoided lust personally, the whole community knows that you and another lady than your wife, are there in the church house doing things together. They WILL think the worst. The wicked do the same and worse, but they KNOW what your standard is supposed to be, and you are doing what THEY do. Preacher, go find a man to do that job, or do without.

Ephesians 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

This, like in the day of the Levites, was a man's world. The home was the wife's and daughter's world.

Part Four: Making changes

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Aquilla and Priscilla

Read all about this exceptional couple who served God and made a living to His Glory at the same time. Check out these texts:

Acts 18; Romans 16:3; 1 Cor. 16:19; 2 Timothy 4:19

How about looking for a service you can do, and include your wife? This Bible couple are the ideal. They were both busy making a living, but they were free to make time for the Lord's Church and evangelism. They even were able to move their business in order to help the Apostle Paul establish churches. We hear so many "success stories" of people who did mighty things in the market place. Well, would you set out to make the changes needed to be a "success" on the order of Aquilla and Priscilla?

World Wide Web

1 Thessalonians 4:11 And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;

I have been a piano tuner for about 19 years. It is good work, and I thank the Lord for it. About 6 years ago I wrote a book on tuning and repairing your own piano. I was going to try to sell it to a publisher, but I knew the process was very nerve racking, and it could take years. So, my sons both encouraged me to put the book on the World Wide Web free and sell the parts to do the repairs and the tools needed.

We went on the Web in late 1996, and we did order forms only. Later, we went to ordering by a toll free number and credit cards. The business has been growing steadily all the while since we started. It is a niche, which is the ideal situation, though out market is limited. But, we hope it will take us through retirement with some cushion to add to Social Security.

Our children have watched me as a tuner, and they have helped with the mail order business on the Web, and they are convinced that self employment is a great idea if one can pull it off. Our next venture, Lord willing, is that we are opening an online 1950s auction of collectibles, and we will use eBay as out "auction house."

There are so many ways to work for yourself. The work is often demanding, and you have to learn the discipline to "going to work" at home. But, the blessing of being able to set your own standards and hours is very satisfying. No one can demand that I work overtime if I don't feel like it :-)

Showdown with the boss

Hosea 14:2 Take with you words, and turn to the LORD: say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we render the calves of our lips.

If your boss will not listen to your words which are Bible based-- words which are the foundation of honest work and a good conscience toward God, give him a thumping. No man has the right to trash your zeal for the Lord Jesus and His Word.

If there is a place where you could perform without having to deal with corrupt communications and dishonest deals and products, you may want to offer to make a move. The problem is, if one level of a company is corrupt, the other levels are almost always affected in some way.

Move

1 Peter 2:12 Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.

Back to the farm:
Many people have sold out and moved back to the farm. This is honorable work, for we see in the Bible how Cain and Able were farmers, and we see that Jesus used grape vines and sheep as examples of good things in His teaching. Farming is perhaps one of the most honorable vocations a man can choose, and his kids learn to work at an early age so much easier on the farm. A kid on the farm is an asset of about $60,000 worth as he grows up. A kid in the city, where his Dad goes to a factory to work, is a liability of about $40,000 as he grows up. The farm makes a man of a kid almost every time.

Over to the competition:
One way to solve problems in the work place is to go over to the competition. You can state your standards as you enter the new company, and if they agree, you have the high ground.

Pay cut better than guilt:
Some men are so obsessed with top pay that they refuse to get into a better schedule or find better co-workers to live with. Money is not everything. You might be able to find better work, closer to home, and fewer hours for a little less. What are you doing with this life friend, just grabbing maximum cash? How stupid! One way to improve the situation is to resign from your job, then go around to Human Resources and apply for your old job back. On the form, ask for less pay, less hours, hand it to your boss, and see what happens. Now, you better have something in the other hand in case your boss takes you up on the resignation and runs you off.

Re-training:
There are many men who could re-train in night school or through programs offered by Manpower or even their own employer. This makes them more valuable, and these men can then move up in their own company and improve their situation, or they can change vocations completely. It takes some hard hours for a while, but the end result is more time with the family and possible more honorable work.

Self-employed:
Being self-employed has its fearful moments, but it sure is the best way to control the conditions of work you do. You can just not work for perverted people-- It is your choice. You have no boss but the Lord, and you can schedule your work so that you have time with your family. Also, your kids can work with you, and they can learn a trade from you. You cannot take you son to work with you on the assembly line, right? I believe it is VERY smart to teach and kid to become self-employed.

Christian Service Changes

Isaiah 52:11 Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, touch no unclean thing; go ye out of the midst of her; be ye clean, that bear the vessels of the LORD.

When you are employed by a church, Bible college, mission board, or any other "Christian organization," remember this-- no one in the New Testament was employed by and organization to et the work of the Lord done. I have been a missionary under two mission boards. I left one, not because they were heretics, but because they were drifting in compromise, and I belonged to God, not them.

More on. God is NOT limited to corporations to get his work done. As usual, make preparations ahead of time if possible. Check out the next group you join, or simply ask the Lord to show you how to work alone with the local church as your Bible based authority over you. This is what Paul did. He would be called a "loaner" today, but he had the Jerusalem church to which re reported regularly, and he took counsel from them.

End Thoughts

Psalm 90:17 And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.

Proverbs 16:2 All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits.

John 15:3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.

Of the Holy Spirit if He has been talking to you:

Hebrews 12:25 See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:

To you pastors:

Ezekiel 44:23 And they shall teach my people the difference between the holy and profane, and cause them to discern between the unclean and the clean.
